According to Dr. Thomas Coates Stockton, "The record of the Virginia Stocktons begins with Davis Stockton. The Virginia Magazine of History and Biography states that Davis Stockton came from the North of Ireland". (from "The Stockton Family of New Jersey and Other Stocktons" by Dr. Thomas Coates Stockton, Pub. 1911)
Some of the books I have read state that there is evidence Davis Stockton was in New York, New Jersey, and even Pennsylvania, before migrating to Virginia. No documentary sources are cited in any of these publications so it is not known what "evidence" that might be. The fact is that no documentary evidence for these statements has ever been found by any researcher. The ancestral line for Davis Stockton is not presently known. The earliest known documentary record of Davis Stockton was created March 12, 1739 when he received a patent for 400 acres of land "on both sides of Ivy Creek a branch of the Rivanna and on the South side of the same", Goochland County (later Albemarle Co.), Virginia. [Patents Book 18, 1738-39, pp. 536 & 537].
